When considering a protein powder, sugar free is just one of the primary considerations that need to be incorporated into your decision.
Quality may start with taste, but you should also investigate whether the product is: pesticide free, certified organic, GMO free, the manufacturing process that allows retention of minerals and vitamins (cold extraction), and whether the product contains heavy metals.
The latter is important based on a Consumer Reports study that shows some of the most popular protein powders contained cadmium, arsenic and lead. Other considerations can include fair trade and green manufacturing facilities.
One of my personal pet peeves is artificial sweeteners. I don’t think you can effectively “fake” sugar without some drawbacks. Certain natural sweeteners in small amounts are generally the best option, but many protein supplements do not even need sweetener to begin with.
Without further ado, here are three of the top sugar free protein powders:
Warrior Blend™ by Sun Warrior®
Although originally designed for vegans, it is quickly becoming a favorite among non-vegans and natural protein fans as well. You can read my full review of Sun Warrior here.
This organic powder stands on its own as a source for amino acids, easily digested, non-GMO, doesn’t contain any sugar, soy, gluten, yeast, animal proteins, dairy, any of the common allergens and is completely raw.
The cranberry, hemp and pea protein blend makes this an excellent low carb option and their use of coconut oil for medium chain tryglyceride fats offers the energy boost as well as protection against inflammation. Sweetened with stevia and just 80 calories, it is high in antioxidants, nutrients and protein.
The Warrior Blend is free of artificial colors and preservatives. It is made using cold extraction process and available in Chocolate, Vanilla and Natural. Each flavor varies slightly in content; Chocolate, Per Serving: 34 g protein, 100 calories with 10 calories from fat, total fat 1g, total carbs= 3 g, calcium 3%, iron 36%.
Vanilla, Per Serving: 19 g protein, 100 calories with 15 calories from fat, total fat 2 g, total carbs = 2 g, calcium 2%, iron 32%. Natural, Per Serving: 20 g protein, 100 calories with 10 calories from fat, total fat 1 g, total carbs= 1g, calcium 1%, iron 26%. You can find the Warrior Blend for a reasonable price here.

Tera’s Organic Whey is certified organic and chemical free. Available in a larger array of flavors, many of which are used in baking and culinary products, including Organic: Blueberry, Bourbon Vanilla, Coffee, Fair Trade Dark Chocolate, and Plain. 1 oz and 12 oz servings. Each flavor varies for nutrition information.
Plain, per serving: 22 g protein, 110 calories with 15 calories from fat, total fat 1.5 g, total carbs= 3 g, vitamin A 2%, calcium 10%, iron 2%. You can find the Tera’s Organic Whey for a reasonable price here.
Nutiva® Hemp Protein/Protein Hi Fiber
100% certified organic products sourced from green facilities and operations using fair trade certifications. You can check out my full review of Nutiva here.
Plant-based organic hemp protein and fiber made from raw hempseeds, non-GMO, vegan; hemp contains all twenty amino acids including nine essential, Omega 3&6 essential fatty acids, cold process manufactured, chemical free, non-irradiated, containers that are non-BPA.
Organic Hemp Protein and Protein Hi Fiber are highest quality plant proteins containing branch-chain amino acids, highest content on the planet of 66% edestin (bioactive globulin protein for easy digestion).
This is listed as the third choice due to the fact that not all prefer the taste of hemp. It may be an acquired taste, however, this powder can be mixed with other sources to improve the taste quality.
Ingredients include: Organic Hemp Protein 15 g contains 50% proteins, 26% fiber = 10% soluble, 90% insoluble, iron, magnesium, zinc.
One serving provides 15 g raw organic protein, 8 g of fiber. Organic Hemp Protein Hi Fiber has 37% protein; 40% fiber, 10% soluble, 90% insoluble; iron, magnesium, and zinc; beneficial fats. One serving offers 11 g of raw organic protein and 12 g of fiber. 90 calories, 25 calories from fat; total fat 3 g, total carbs = 9g, no sugar additives, however 1 g sugars are derived from natural occurring sources.
This protein is hemp based for flavor, however protein shakes are available in Chocolate and Vanilla. For pricing options, see this listing.
