MyProtein Impact Whey Review: Is it a Good Buy?

True fitness is only achieved when you combine a daily exercise program with a healthy diet. In this case, the “healthy diet” should include nutrients that will encourage your body to build muscle. Which, of course, means protein powder.

Protein powder delivers a hefty dose of amino acids, promoting the formation of new muscle tissue that expands energy storage in your muscle fibers. Whey protein, in particular, is effective due to the fact that it’s easily absorbed and put to use by your body. There are literally HUNDREDS of whey protein powders on the market, so it can be hard to know which one is a good option to use.

MyProtein Impact Whey is one of the highest-rated protein powders in the UK, so we took a closer look at it to see how it stacked up against the more popular American whey protein powders. Check out our findings below…

About MyProtein Impact Whey

Impact Whey by MyProtein is a whey protein powder, meaning it’s made from cow’s milk. Whey is the byproduct formed during the manufacturing of cheese and milk, the clear liquid that contains a lot of protein but far less fat. This whey protein powder contains just 100 calories per serving, but 20 grams of protein in each scoop.

You get just 2 grams of fat from the protein powder, as well as just 1 gram of carbs. It definitely has an excellent nutritional profile—diet-friendly and gym-friendly, to say the least.

The supplement is 80% protein, and it delivers all the essential amino acids needed to build muscle. The quick-acting supplement will help to counteract fat storage and increase fat burning, all while increasing the growth of lean muscle. It’s a simple, no-frills protein powder that delivers exactly what your body needs.

Key Features

Specifications

This is a protein powder designed with your convenience in mind. It’s intended to be easy to mix (in a blender, blender bottle, or even with a spoon), and you’ll find it mixes well with both water and milk. The undenatured whey protein is easily absorbed into your body and will supply a steady dose of amino acids for muscle building. With its minimal-ingredient formula, it’s far less likely to cause stomach upset or indigestion.

One of the great things about this supplement is the wide range of flavors. You can find it in everything from blueberry to chocolate mint to mocha to natural vanilla to peanut cookie to strawberry cream. There is even an unflavored option for those who want to use it in their recipes.

The variety of this protein powder means you’ll never get sick of the taste. You can always try a new flavor, so you won’t have to worry about getting bored of taking protein powder.

Pros of MyProtein Impact Whey

Here are a few of the things users love about MyProtein Impact Whey:

  • Great flavors – These are some of the best-tasting flavors on the market, as well as one of the broadest selections. Few other protein powders give you as many or as varied a range of flavors. If you’re the sort of person who gets bored of taking a certain protein powder after a few weeks, you’ll love the variety this one offers you.
  • Minimalist –In this modern age of highly processed foods, it’s always nice to find products that contain fewer ingredients. In addition to whey protein concentrate (80% of the product), there is only the flavoring (artificial and natural), sucralose (for sweetener), and soy lecithin (for a thickener).
  • Easily digested – Not only is the supplement easy on the taste buds, it will also sit easy in your stomach. Whey protein powder is easily digested and has the lowest chance of causing stomach upset. You can take this protein powder without worrying that it will make you sick after each use.
  • Quality product – This is one of the highest rated protein powders on Labdoor.com, and it’s ranked as the UK’s #1 protein powder. It may not be as popular in the U.S., but it’s definitely a quality product worth considering.

Cons of MyProtein Impact Whey

As with any product, there are a few downsides to taking Impact Whey:

  • Artificial ingredients – Not only does this protein powder use artificial flavorings, it also uses Splenda (sucralose) for sweetener. For those looking for a fully organic or all-natural product, these ingredients are definitely a no-no.
  • Too sweet – More than a few users have commented that this protein powder is far too sweet for their tastes. The combination of artificial sweeteners and flavorings definitely makes this one more likely to be on the too-sweet end of the spectrum.
  • Long shipping – Given that the product is made in the UK, anyone ordering it in the U.S. will have to wait a long time for the protein powder to be shipped overseas and arrive at their door. This may be a minor concern, but some people will find the extra-long shipping time a serious irritation.

FAQ: MyProtein Impact Whey

How much whey protein should I drink a day?

It all depends on your fitness goals and how much protein per day you need to take. Every body is different, of course, so knowing the optimal amount of protein to consume each day is important.

There have been many myths out there that say you need an insane amount of protein, 30+ grams, several times a day. Depending on your ultimate fitness goals, size, body composition and the like, most of us won’t need anywhere near this amount of protein daily.

Although I am a protein supplement nut, I do agree with this answer on Quora from another fitness expert, Luke Edwards.

“Whenever you hear something really crazy you need to ask yourself if it makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint. It’s a great way to quickly determine if incoming info is plausible or not. This “dogma” would denote that human beings had to consciously limit (not to mention constantly hunt down) 30g of protein at every meal, 5-6 times a day. …If that were true, not only were we all doomed, but I personally wouldn’t have put up with that.” Yet, this myth that we need to consume so much protein exists.

“Plain and simple, more protein consumed just takes a longer time to be digested and absorbed. For some numbers, digestion of a standard meal is still incomplete after five hours, lasting more in the range of eight hours for completion. Amino acids are still being released into your bloodstream and absorbed into muscles during which time. You are still “anabolic.” These numbers are based on a fairly average meal consisting of 600 kcal; 75g carbs, 37g protein and 17g fat.” says Edwards.

When should I take my whey protein shakes?

Timing isn’t necessarily everything when it comes to whey protein shakes. When you consume protein really comes down to your personal schedule and what fitness goals you are trying to accomplish. I think you should take your whey protein shakes whenever you feel is best for you. Some of us take protein before going to bed to feel fuller, get a good night sleep and start our intermittent fasting. Some of us start our day with a protein meal replacement because it is quick and easy to replace breakfast that way.

I’ve answered this question before in my blog When is the best time of day to consume your protein supplement? But you can watch this video to get the answers too!

Which flavor of MyProtein Impact Whey tastes best?

There are so many flavors of MyProtein Impact whey to consider — you will definitely find one or two that you love. While I’m partial to the ones that are not too sweet (I’m a vanilla guy at heart as most of you already know), there are many of you that love the variety of flavors and tastes of this brand.

Here is my abbreviated best MyProtein Impact Whey flavors to choose from:

  • Maple and Pecan
  • Blueberry Cheesecake
  • Tiramisu
  • Peanut Cookie
  • Salted Caramel
  • Vanilla Raspberry
  • Sticky Toffee Pudding

Of course, there are still some basic flavors that are great too:

  • Strawberry
  • Strawberry Cream
  • Vanilla (my personal fave)
  • Natural Chocolate
  • Chocolate Smooth
  • Cookies and Cream
  • Chocolate Mint

My advice to you when it comes to choosing a flavor: get a sample pack first! There are many flavors to choose from with this protein supplement, which is one of the reasons many recommend it. It’s always good to try before you buy, do your research. If you can’t find a sample pack, you can always get the small packs on Amazon. Either way, try flavors you think you’ll love that good reviews on Amazon too.

Of course, you for the price you pay, you could try new flavors too — like Blue Raspberry!

What are the side effects of whey protein?

While some complain about digestion side effects of whey protein, it really does depend on the quality of the whey protein in question. There are many second-rate whey protein powders out there that contain other ingredients (like sugar, sodium, additives) that people are reacting too — not necessarily the whey protein itself. If you choose a high-quality protein, you shouldn’t have the digestional upset of other sub-par whey protein powders.

According to WebMd:

Whey protein is LIKELY SAFE for most children and adults when taken by mouth appropriately. High doses can cause some side effects such as increased bowel movements, nausea, thirst, bloating, cramps, reduced appetite, tiredness (fatigue), and headache.

There are a few Special Precautions & Warnings, however:

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: There is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking whey protein if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

Milk allergy: If you are allergic to cow’s milk, avoid using whey protein.

Is MyProtein Impact Whey good for weight loss?

Any high-quality whey protein can help with weight loss if you use the product correctly. If you want to lose weight, It’s all about getting in the right amount of calories to help with weight loss, plus making sure you get the nutrients that your body needs. The more nutrients you consume, the less likely you will be to cave to your cravings because your body will feel full and satisfied.

Using a high-quality whey protein, say as a meal replacement can help decrease the amount of calories you consume overall in a day. Make sure you keep add-ons in check, it is very easy to make a 1000 calorie ‘meal replacement’ shake just from adding healthy fats, additional dairy, nut butter, bananas, and the like. Don’t make this mistake unless you want to seriously bulk up!

MyProtein Impact Whey only has around 100 calories or so per serving, so if you just add water, you can drastically cut back on calories for one meal. However, you might not feel super satisfied without the carbs or healthy fat. I would add in a bit of healthy fat, around 80-90 calories worth of a nut butter, or a bit of avocado, plus use unsweetened almond milk (40-80 calories worth, 250 – 500 mls) to your smoothie to make your own meal replacement for under 300 calories!

Is MyProtein Impact Whey good for bulking or adding muscle?

I would say yes, but only if you use this supplement properly. Bulking up or adding muscle is not just about adding more protein. It has to be about adding the right kind of protein, a high-quality whey protein in this case, but also pairing that with the proper lifestyle and fitness choices to make you gain the right kind of weight.

Just as I discussed before, calories matter, but that is only one part of the equation. You have to give your body the nutrients and protein it needs in order to bulk up or add muscle. Just taking a protein shake every day does not guarentee lean muscle mass!

Other Options to Consider

Not sure MyProtein Impact Whey is the best choice for you? Here are a few other options you might want to consider:

EAS 100% Pure Whey Protein Powder

This is one of the top-rated U.S.-made protein powders, and one of the most affordable as well. You get 5 pounds of protein powder for just $38—far cheaper than the higher-priced Impact Whey. There is also 30 grams of protein per scoop, up to 50% more than Impact Whey.

EAS doesn’t offer as many flavors, but the protein powder isn’t as sweet and contains fewer artificial additives. It’s a 100% whey protein that delivers results.

Naked Whey

If you want truly pure whey protein powder, Naked Whey is definitely the option to consider. It’s 100% pure, with no additives or extra ingredients. There is no flavoring—it’s just simple, natural whey protein powder derived from small dairy farms in California.

You get 25 grams of protein and 5.9 grams of BCAAs with every scoop. On the downside, you’ll pay $86 for 5 pounds of the stuff, making this one of the priciest protein powders on the market.

I’ve talked about Naked Whey before, read my full Naked Whey review here!

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard

This is the gold standard of the whey protein powder market. It’s not only one of the highest-rated products around, it’s also one of the best-tasting. The mixture of whey protein isolates and concentrates ensures maximum efficacy. You get 24 grams of protein and 5.5 grams of BCAAs per serving—all at just $58 for 5 pounds of quality protein powder. This also makes a great protein shake that you’ll love!
